Hardware Wallets: How to Choose the Right One for You

By Lior  |  Liortec  |  Crypto Security

You've heard it before: if you're serious about crypto, you need a hardware wallet. But walk into the market and you'll find dozens of options — different prices, brands, and features. How do you choose the right one?

What Is a Hardware Wallet, and Why Does It Matter?

A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your private keys completely offline. Unlike a software wallet on your phone or computer, it keeps your keys away from the internet — and away from hackers. Even if your computer is infected with malware, your funds remain safe inside the device.

But here's what most people don't tell you: not all hardware wallets offer the same level of security. Choosing the wrong one — or buying from the wrong source — can be just as dangerous as having no protection at all.

Starting Out? Tangem Is the Easiest First Cold Wallet

"My own first cold wallet was a Tangem — and recently I upgraded to the Tangem Ring, which I now wear every day. It's comfortable, discreet, and always with me. My crypto, literally on my finger."

— Lior, Liortec

If you're buying your very first hardware wallet, I personally recommend starting with Tangem. There's no seed phrase to write down and potentially lose, no complicated setup, and no technical background required. You simply tap the card — or ring — to your phone and you're in full control of your crypto. It's as close to plug-and-play as cold storage gets.

Tangem Card

The classic Tangem Wallet comes as a set of cards — the size of a credit card — that work with your phone via NFC. Simple, elegant, and extremely beginner-friendly. Perfect as a first cold wallet.

Tangem Ring — Cold Storage You Wear

The Tangem Ring takes it one step further. It's a hardware wallet built into a sleek, lightweight ring. No screen, no battery, no charging — just tap your finger to your phone to sign transactions. I bought one for myself recently and I haven't taken it off since. It's that practical.

What to Look for When Choosing Any Hardware Wallet

As you grow in your crypto journey, here are the key features that actually matter:

Open-Source Firmware

Can you verify what's running on the device? Transparency matters. If the manufacturer hides its code, you're forced to trust blindly. In crypto, blind trust is a liability.

Secure Element Chip

Look for devices that use a certified secure element (SE) chip — the same technology used in passports and credit cards. It makes physical attacks on the device significantly harder.

On-Device Screen

Always verify transaction details on the wallet's own screen, not just on your computer. Malware can alter what you see on your monitor while your device is confirming something else entirely.

Passphrase Support

A strong passphrase adds a 25th word to your seed phrase, creating a hidden wallet layer. Even if someone finds your seed phrase, they still can't access your funds without the passphrase.

The Counterfeit Threat — Don't Get Burned

⚠️ Warning: Counterfeit hardware wallets are real and dangerous. Devices sold through third-party sellers have been found pre-loaded with compromised firmware, designed to steal your funds the moment you deposit anything.

The rule is simple: only buy directly from the manufacturer's official website. Never from Amazon third-party sellers, eBay, or a friend of a friend. The small discount is not worth losing everything.

Before You Trust Any Device — Do This First

When your hardware wallet arrives, verify its authenticity using the manufacturer's official verification process. Most reputable brands provide one. Skip this step and you're gambling with your assets.

  • Check the packaging for signs of tampering before opening
  • Run the official device authenticity check from the manufacturer's app or website
  • Never use a device that came with a pre-filled seed phrase — that's always a scam

The Bottom Line

A hardware wallet is one of the best investments you can make in your crypto security. But buying the wrong one — or from the wrong source — can be worse than no protection at all.

If you're just getting started, Tangem is the easiest, most beginner-friendly option out there. And if you want to take it to the next level, the Tangem Ring is cold storage you literally wear on your finger. I use it every day — it's comfortable, discreet, and always with me.
