You just bought your first cryptocurrency. Congratulations — and welcome to a world where you are responsible for your own financial security. No bank is watching over your money anymore. That freedom is powerful, but it comes with responsibility.
Here are the seven things you should do right now, today, before anything else.
1. Understand That Crypto Transactions Are Irreversible
This is the most important thing to internalize. If you send crypto to the wrong address, it is gone. If someone tricks you into sending crypto to them, it is gone. There is no “undo,” no chargeback, no customer support that can reverse it.
Every action you take with crypto should carry this awareness.
2. Move Your Crypto Off the Exchange
If you bought crypto on an exchange (Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, etc.), it is currently in their custody — not yours. The exchange holds the keys, and you hold a promise.
Get a hardware wallet and move your crypto to it. This is the single most impactful security step you can take.
3. Set Up Two-Factor Authentication — Everywhere
Enable 2FA on every account connected to your crypto: exchange accounts, your email, and your password manager. Use an authenticator app (Google Authenticator or Authy), not SMS.
Write down the backup codes and store them securely offline.
4. Write Down Your Seed Phrase — On Paper
When you set up your wallet, you will receive a seed phrase (12 or 24 words). Write it down on paper. Never type it on a computer. Never photograph it. Never store it in any digital format.
This phrase is your only backup. Protect it like it is worth your entire crypto portfolio — because it is.
5. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Every crypto-related account should have a unique, strong password. Never reuse passwords. Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden) to generate and store them.
6. Learn to Recognize Scams
Common scam patterns to watch for:
- “Send me crypto and I’ll send you double back” — always a scam
- Urgent messages claiming your account is compromised — phishing
- “Customer support” reaching out to you first — scam
- Investment opportunities that guarantee returns — scam
- Anyone asking for your seed phrase — scam, always
When in doubt, slow down. Legitimate opportunities can always wait.
7. Bookmark Official Sites
Phishing sites look identical to real ones. Always access your exchange, wallet, and crypto services through bookmarks — never through search results or links in emails.
